GP mass media debate motions

Hey 33/09, rmb Ms Goh told us to prepare for the debate on mass media?? We are sticking to the last grouping for debates. She said there's no rush as we'll be doing the debate end of week 1.

The debate motions are:
1) Mass media brings more harm than good.
2) Censorship should be banished.
3) Blogs are demonstrations of narcissism.
4) Advertisements are of no use at all.

I'm not sure if we have to start preparing now, since the debate going to be at the end of week 1. But if you have too much time on your hands (which I highly doubt so), why not? :)

Hilo. For those who missed out on the extra lesson (Economics) today, Doctor Anderson went through the determinants of Demand and its Elasticity. Next extra lesson that he will conduct will be only determinants of Supply and its Elasticity.

The extra lessons really helps to go through stuff in the last two terms, so please try to be more enthusiastic in attending the lessons.

I guess all of us don't really know what is going on in both Econs lectures and tutorials at all, which we know we are all guilty of not preparing and stuff like that. Nonetheless, we all want to go on to J2, we all want to score As, and some of us will want to do H3. So let's work hard together.

Below are some key ideas which I think are very important in what we are studying right now and answering questions. There are no models in this note because I don’t know how to draw them on the com! Anyway I think if each factor that are listed out can be explained without the help of notes, then I suppose we at least have the basic concepts which enable us to use models to illustrate complex economic theories thus solving questions. Hopefully they are of some help. :D.

I have only finished the notes up to Elasticity. Will try to finish all the summarising the notes by this weekend.

Concepts on Demand and Supply

1. Scarcity, Choice and Opportunity Cost, Demand, Supply
-Explain the concept of the terms
- Apply the concepts.
-Every choice incurs an Opportunity Cost. Opportunity Cost is an idea that we must always remember because in application questions, the evaluation of the strategies, policies involves opportunity cost that we need to consider. (Linking it to the recent lectures about market failure, and attempts by government to correct the externalities)

2. Price Determinants of Demand (Inverse relation -> downward sloping curve)
This is not in your notes, so please clarify with Dr Anderson if you are unsure!) These factors are actually an extension of the notes’ factors BUT they are clearer and please don’t think that they are not in our syllabus

- Percentage of Income

3. Non own-price Determinants of Demand

Population Size and Structure, Expectation are probably two very important factors that we have to think about. Consider issues such as AGING population, Large Vs. Small Population, Oil Prices,

4. Price Determinants of Supply (Direct relations -> Upward sloping curve)
- Costs
- Incentives for production
We need to know this very well, as these two concepts will come into picture when we talk about the topic of Firms and How they operate.

5. Non own-price Determinants of Supply
-Cost of production: Factor Prices and State of Technology
- Government Policies
- Prices of related goods: Competitive Supply (Substitutes) and Joint Supply ( Complement)
- Number of suppliers: Firm within the industries to increase productions and Entrance of new firms
-Nature/Unpredictable Events
Goal of firms: Profit Maximisation and Sales Maximisation
- Sellers’ price expectation
Link these determinants of supply to market structure! All these concepts are relevant to various market structures in terms of entrance of firms.

Elasticity

Price elasticity: Measure of Degree of Responsiveness of quantity demanded/supplied of a good to a change in its price

PED/PES more than 1 =Elastic
less than 1 = Inelastic
Equals 1 = Unit Elastic (Check Notes what is that!)
Equals 0 = Perfectly Inelastic

The determinants of price elasticity are similar to the above factors.
Factors determining the price elasticity of supply:

- Time period: Momentary, Short Run and Long Run

-Factor mobility

-Availability of stocks

-Existence of Spare capacity : ability to react to market changes ( How then does it affects Supply?)

-Ease of substituting factors : factors of production

The factor: Time period is a significance determinant of Price Elasticity. Thus more thought and analysis must be given in terms of the changes in the models.

Application of elasticity can be found in almost all the chapters following thus, a thorough knowledge on the changes of models and stuff must be achieved so we won’t get so lost XD

*Note that there is only Price Elasticity of Supply.

Income elasticity (Take note of all the possible models in the cases below. It is important!!!)

POSITIVE YED (Direct Relation of quantity demanded and income --> upward sloping curve, careful of axes)

The Government is committed to providing good quality child care services that are available to parents at affordable fees. As at September 2007, there were 745 child care centres, catering to almost 52,000 children, or a quarter of the cohort aged 18 months to 7 years. This is a 50 percent increase in the number of centres from 1998, when there were just 491 child care centres. We provide the universal child care subsidy and the Baby Bonus scheme to make child care services more affordable to the average family. Low-income families also get help through the Centre-based Financial Assistance Scheme for Childcare. My Ministry monitors the enrolment of child care centres closely. We work with the Community Development Councils to develop child care centres to meet projected demand. Based on capacity utilization of childcare centres and other projections, there is scope for government to increase the number of childcare centres in HDB estates by 10 next year. The increase in the number of commercial and workplace childcare centres will be based on market demand.

Centre-based Financial Assistance for Child Care Centre Scheme

The Community Development Councils of the Ministry of Community Development and Sports administers the Centre-based Financial Assistance for Child Care Centre Scheme. It provides funds for low-income families to pay for child care services for their pre-schoolers below 7 years old. This scheme aims to assist working parents, especially mothers from disadvantaged families, to remain in the labour force. The subsidy ranges from $100 to $250 per child per month and it can be for a period of 6 months or 12 months.

Back-to-work Child Care Scheme

The Scheme assists eligible mothers who have dependent children of pre-school age with the start-up costs such as to pay for the enrolment fees, uniforms, etc. for child care. It is designed to assist mothers from low-income families to take up full-time employment by relieving them of their workload by providing child care. A grant of up to maximum of $1,000 is given to women from lower-income families for up to two children per household and paid once for each eligible child in the household. To be eligible, the household income of the family should not exceed $1,500 per month.

Student Care Centre Program

The Ministry of Community Development and Sports promotes the development of Student Care Centres (SCCs), targeting at-school children between the ages 7 and 14 who do not have alternative forms of care before and after school. The aim of the SCC program, is to ensure that these children are constructively occupied while their parents are at work.

The Chinese Communist Regime Is Responsible for Countless Broken Families
During the persecution, many more practitioners were forced to become homeless in order to avoid being illegally arrested and persecuted. Ban on Family Violence Urged in China
Family violence happens in 30 percent of Chinese families, according to surveys conducted by the All-China Women's Federation. Of the bruised wives, 32.1 percent were regularly beaten four times a month, and 39 percent more than once every month, according to another survey by the Women's Federation of Guangdong Province.
Out of 270 million families in China, more than 100,000 are break down every year because of family violence, said Hu Kangsheng, deputy director of the Legislative Affairs Commission under the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee.

Factors contributing to family breakdown in Africa

- AIDS
Causes the death of family members and parents, leaving children to fend for themselves. Child-headed households -- where the head of the family is 17 years and younger -- grew from 118000 to 148000 between 2002 and 2007 because of Aids, and the number of orphans who have lost both parents have doubled from 352000 to 701000.

- Migrant labour

Common in a globalizing world where rural-urban migration is more prevalent, as well as migration abroad in search of higher living standards and better employment opportunities). This causes fathers as well as sons of working age to leave the family, causing the breakdown of a complete family unit. Africans had the highest number of living absent fathers at 50.2%, according to the South African Institute of Race Relations' latest Fast Facts survey on SA families in 2009.

- Divorce
Most African religion and Christianity frown upon divorce, and marriage is regarded as a sacred contract between two families. However, now, with western concepts of individualism and personal liberty, it is more of a contract between 2 people. There is less family pressure to stay married, and divorce is not only more common now, but also more accepted. The most common reason sited for divorce in South Africa is simply that the couples drift apart, followed closely by drug and alcohol abuse (cocaine use being prevalent), physical abuse and unemployment. More recently, statistics show that financial difficulties are coming to the fore in most divorce cases filed for the latter half of 2007 early 2008 whilst infidelity and lack of communication are cited less.
- Lack of efforts by government to promote family togetherness
Not enough is being done to preserve family life, with both the state and NGOs falling short in terms of providing support structures. There are not even sufficient numbers of social workers to help out with family difficulties.
- Early marriages
Due to the tradition of early marriages in Africa, with girls as young as 12 and 13 giving birth. Teenage pregnancy has become a primary cause for concern as a result of its contribution to higher maternal mortality rates. Medical professionals say pre-adolescence marriage is partly responsible for Africa's maternal mortality rates, one of the highest in the world. Death rates are also higher for both mothers and babies, as teenage bodies are not ready for rigours of pregnancy or childbirth. It is not unusual for both mother and child to die during the birth. Some effects of teen pregnancy are a lack of social security; poverty; repeat pregnancies before age 20; and negative effects on "domestic life." Most of these girls also commit suicide due to depression and rejection from parents and friends. Thus, all these contribute to the breakdown of the family through the death of the mother and/or child.

What kind of social norms do we want in our future society?
Divorce rates today have gone up from 5 persons per 1000 to 6.7 persons per 1000. The singlehood rate for females has gone up from 21.9% in 1980 to 25% in 1997. For males, it has gone up from 33.1% in 1980 to 37.5% in 1997.

Stable Marriage and Stable Family

Recent surveys indicate that the number of families where both families work is on the increase. In 1980, 27% of married couples were dual career couples. In 1995, the number rose to 40%. 45% of married women were working in 1989 and the number rose to 56% in 1998.

•Low self esteem:
Children from divorced families often feel rejected. The feeling that one has been abandoned by the two closest people in the world often leaves scars that are difficult to heal. The child is left to try to understand why these two people cannot stay together and may even personalise the blame because they feel that they are not good enough to bring them back together.

•Trust issue leading to difficulty in forming new relationships (behavioural disorder??):
Some come out badly wounded from these family battles and develop complex defence systems within them. There is no one who is absolutely trustworthy to them because the two people they had trusted the most were also the two people who had hurt them most.

Marine Parade Leadership Foundation

The Marine Parade Leadership Foundation is established by the advisers of Marine Parade GRC and MacPherson SMC (known as the MPM Division) under the leadership of our Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, with the aim of promoting excellence in community leadership and developing a new generation of leaders for the Grassroots Organisations (GROs) and Voluntary Welfare Organisations (VWOs). This is a foundation started by the advisers who raised funds on their own (news has it that SM Goh sang two songs during a private function and raised a huge sum!) and even contributed their own money to create a $3-million dollar foundation to provide students in the MPM Division with more opportunities to lead and serve.

There is a variety of programmes that the Foundation has to offer. I would like to focus your attention to the flagship programme, the NextGen Leadership Programme.
The NextGen Leadership Programme is designed to develop the head, heart and hands of future community leaders. Besides instilling in participants a desire to serve the community, the programme aims to equip participants with interpersonal and leadership skills that would enable them to carry out their community service work more effectively.
This six-month programme will begin with a local training component on leadership development in June, and culminate in an overseas volunteer expedition in December this year. The former will bring participants together through experiential learning and bonding in a series of workshops, talks and visits. The latter will see participants through an exciting overseas community service project, where youth leaders will leverage on their skills and knowledge to help the needy living in adverse or unfavourable conditions. The participants will be involved in existing community projects overseas because this would be more beneficial to the local communities as there is sustainability as compared to one-off projects. One possible partnership is Mercy Relief, which Dr Fatimah Lateef, MP of Marine Parade GRC and TJC alumnus, is the director of the organisation.

Selection Criteria:
The key criteria we are looking for is those with proven or potential leadership qualities and a desire to serve in the community services.
The applicant must be• Between the age of 17 and 25 years old (For TA2s, just try anyway even if you are below 17!)• Either a resident of MPM or studying in a recognised post-secondary educational institution located in MPM (TJC is just outside of the GRC – just try anyway!)

Applicants can apply directly to the Foundation, or they may also be nominated by peers or teachers.

and there's the eng fair individual portfolio essay thing which is due 4th march, wednesday.

Ok, We had handed in the Sudoku thingy but we had only earned 10 point for our CG because we handed in like at 11 plus? Anyway, most CGs got 10 points except for the top 4 CGs who handed in first. They gotten 50, 40 30, 20 points respectively. SO yep. We ARE NOT THAT FAR behind!

hi everybody!
i am planning a class outing celebrate the birthdays of the 5 feb babies from our class and to bond.

they are:
6th - pandora
18th - eileen
20th - sing chuen
24th - serene
26th - nicholas eng

venue: east coast park
date: 28th feb, saturday
time: late afternoon - night [so that those who need to go church can attend also! :) ]
activities: cycle, pinic, bowling etc etc

everyone(excluding feb babies) pls share the cost of the cake.
money matters will be settled at a later time.
